TYBEE ISLAND — The Tybee Island Police Department arrested 33-year-old Hanief Brown at 1:36 a.m. on May 17 and charged him with kidnapping, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, simple battery and reckless conduct, according to a police press release.

At 1:36 a.m., the department received a call referencing a man with a gun who had pointed the weapon at the caller's neck and taken the caller's girlfriend against her will, the press release stated. The caller told officers that he and his girlfriend were in their hotel room when they received a text message from Brown asking for help.

The couple drove to a local gas station, where Brown reportedly pointed a gun at the caller and ordered the caller's girlfriend to leave with him against her will, the press release stated. Officers located Brown and the woman at another local gas station on the island.

Brown's six-year-old child was inside the vehicle, seated near loaded weapons, and was taken into protective custody. During an inventory of the vehicle, officers recovered three firearms and took them as evidence, according to the press release.

A second person, described as an acquaintance of Brown, later came forward and reported having been threatened with a weapon, the press release stated. The department did not identify the second individual by name.

Brown was booked on charges of simple battery, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, terroristic threats, aggravated assault and kidnapping. The investigation is ongoing, according to the department.
