ROTTNEST ISLAND — Steven Mattaboni, a 38-year-old surveyor from Perth, died after being bitten by a shark at Horseshoe Reef off Rottnest Island about 9.55am on Saturday. He was taken by boat to shore at Geordie Bay on the north side of the island, where paramedics attempted to revive him but were unable to do so.

A rescue helicopter landed on Rottnest Island to evacuate Mattaboni to a hospital on the mainland. A five-metre white shark was spotted 80 metres offshore about the time of the attack, according to Surf Life Saving WA. Rottnest Island is located 19km off the coast of Fremantle.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged people to take extra caution in the Geordie Bay area. Western Australia police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Mattaboni is survived by his wife, Shirene Mattaboni, a clinical nurse specialist, and their two daughters, one turning three next month and one four months old. In a statement, Shirene Mattaboni said, "Our hearts are irrevocably broken by the loss of Steven, known affectionately to his mates as Mattas."

She said, "The world has lost a one-of-a-kind gentleman, and our daughters have lost an incredible father far too soon. We extend our deepest, most sincere gratitude to the emergency services and first responders who worked so tirelessly to save him."

Kingsley Football Club issued a tribute to Mattaboni. "Mattas was one of the most genuine people you could meet," the club said. "He had a smile and presence that could light up a room, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook offered condolences on behalf of the state. "My heartfelt condolences go out to the man's family and friends," he said. "Thank you to the first responders and emergency personnel who attended the scene. I would encourage anyone impacted by this tragedy to reach out for support."
