JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency identified the man found dead in Douglas Lake on Thursday morning as 70-year-old Gary Allan Williams of White Pine. The death marked the ninth boating fatality of the year, according to the agency.

A caller reported an unoccupied boat found adrift near the Rankin area, across from the Leadvale Access Area, at about 10:56 a.m. Thursday, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The boat contained fishing gear but no occupants.

Officials responded to the report and began searching the area, according to the agency. A man's body was located in approximately eight feet of water using a remote operated vehicle, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The man was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Jefferson County Rescue Squad divers recovered the body around 3:33 p.m. Thursday, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. An autopsy was ordered, and the incident remains under investigation, the agency said.

Douglas Lake is located in Jefferson County in East Tennessee. Williams was identified by the agency following the recovery of the body later that afternoon. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said the boat Williams had been using was found adrift without anyone aboard before his body was located in the water below. Officials used a remote operated vehicle to find the body in approximately eight feet of water before divers from the Jefferson County Rescue Squad entered the water to complete the recovery. The agency said Williams was not wearing a life jacket. The incident is the ninth boating fatality recorded on Tennessee waterways so far this year, according to the agency, which continues to investigate the circumstances of the death.
