PITTSBURGH — Aaron Rodgers is re-signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract to play under coach Mike McCarthy for his 22nd NFL season. The 42-year-old quarterback's deal includes a base salary between $22 million and $23 million and is worth up to $25 million with incentives.

The Steelers placed an unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers in April. He is expected to attend voluntary offseason practice sessions beginning Monday, and the team begins organized team activities on May 18. Rodgers did not visit the Steelers' facility on Friday as previously reported.

McCarthy coached Rodgers for 13 seasons in Green Bay until 2018. Rodgers has been a starter for 18 straight seasons with Green Bay, the New York Jets and Pittsburgh, and signed with Pittsburgh as the league's oldest active player. Philip Rivers briefly became the NFL's oldest active player late in the season at age 44.

In his first season with the Steelers, Rodgers threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 16 games, posting a 94.8 passer rating, and led the team to the AFC North division title. His touchdown pass with one minute remaining in the regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens secured the Steelers' first division title since 2020 and his first postseason appearance since 2021. The Steelers lost 30-6 to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round on January 12 to end their season.

Rodgers suggested last summer that the 2025 season could be his last. In October, he said, "I'll retire a Packer and see what happens after that. I've got a lot of love for the organization, my time there."

Rodgers has earned 10 Pro Bowl honors and won four NFL Most Valuable Player awards between 2011 and 2021, the second-most all-time behind Peyton Manning. He is tied for first all-time in passer rating, ranks fourth all-time in passing touchdowns and fifth in passing yards. He has attempted 8,743 passes, the sixth-most in NFL history, and threw interceptions on 1.4% of his pass attempts, tying the all-time best percentage. In 2020, he led the NFL with a career-high 48 touchdown passes and a 70.7% completion percentage. He has not returned to a Super Bowl.

During the 2020 season, Rodgers told reporters he had been "immunized" when asked about his Covid-19 vaccination status. He later tested positive for Covid-19 and was sidelined by the NFL. Rodgers told biographer Ian O'Connor: "If there's one thing I wish could have gone different, it's that, because that's the only thing (that critics) could hit me with."

The Steelers' quarterback room includes Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. The team selected Penn State's Drew Allar in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft.
