CHICAGO — A suspect in an attempted ATM break-in in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood stole a Cook County sheriff's deputy's squad car, struck the deputy and led police on a chase down the Dan Ryan Expressway on Saturday morning before being taken into custody, according to officials. Three other suspects were taken into custody near a crash scene in the Little Village neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Four male suspects exited a dark-colored Jeep SUV and entered a business in the 2800-block of West 55th Street around 7:15 a.m., according to Chicago police. The suspects attempted to pry open an ATM while a clerk called police, and security cameras captured the attempted break-in. After several minutes, the suspects ran out of the store and fled in the Jeep as police arrived, leading to a chase.

The Jeep crashed into another SUV in the 3100-block of South California Avenue in Little Village, according to Chicago police. A Cook County sheriff's deputy patrolling near the Cook County Jail stopped at the crash scene around 7:30 a.m., according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. As the deputy exited his squad car, he saw the four suspects fleeing.

One suspect pushed past the deputy, entered the squad car, drove away and hit the deputy, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. The injured deputy was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

The suspected squad car thief led Chicago police and Illinois State Police on a chase down the Dan Ryan Expressway. Illinois State Police deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle near 78th Street in the Chatham neighborhood before 8:30 a.m., and police took the driver into custody after the spike strip deployment.

No other injuries were reported, according to officials. Police recovered three firearms during the investigation, and Area One detectives are investigating the incident, according to Chicago police.

Chicago police identified at least two confirmed robberies on Saturday but have not determined whether the two ATM theft incidents were related. The spike strip deployment and vehicle stop occurred on the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to Illinois State Police.
