PASADENA — The Pasadena Police Department released body camera footage of a March 2 shootout at the Sierra Madre Villa Metro station in which Officer Bryan Vasquez was seriously wounded and the armed suspect was killed. The video shows an officer being shot during a gun battle with an armed suspect during a foot pursuit through a neighborhood.

The shootout occurred around 7:30 p.m., after a gunman shot a victim in the shoulder at the Metro station and fled on foot. Police responded to a call at the station following the shooting. Authorities also released cellphone footage captured by a witness showing the suspect sexually assaulting a second victim before fleeing the area.

Vasquez spotted the suspect several blocks away and chased him through a neighborhood. The footage captures an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and Vasquez as shots rang across the street. Bullet holes were later found in a brick wall near the scene.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Pasadena resident Malcolm Buchanan, died at the scene. Police released an image of the handgun investigators say Buchanan used during the confrontation. Buchanan's grandmother said he struggled with mental health issues and may have been off his medication at the time.

Vasquez, a five-year veteran of the department, was seriously wounded and survived his injuries. He has been released from the hospital and remains on leave while recovering from severe injuries.

Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris said the video was shown to Buchanan's family before being released to the public. "I'm really proud that the officer relied on his training and really set in his mind that he was gonna get through this critical incident," Harris said.

The shooting remains under investigation by the department.
