OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman is officially taking charge of product strategy at the company as it reorganizes to unify ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer-facing API into a single core product team. OpenAI told staff on Friday that Brockman would lead product strategy in addition to his work on AI infrastructure.
"We're consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise," Brockman said in a staff memo, in which he also said the company would merge ChatGPT and its programming product Codex into a single unified experience. Brockman had been overseeing OpenAI's products on an interim basis while Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI deployment, was on medical leave.
Simo remains on leave and worked directly with Brockman on the organizational changes, OpenAI said. The company announced last month that Simo was taking medical leave to focus on her health as part of executive changes.
Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of Codex, has been tapped to lead the company's core product and platform teams. Sottiaux was a key leader in building Codex, one of the company's fastest-growing products, and is among the leaders overseeing development of OpenAI's forthcoming "super app," which aims to combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser into a unified desktop application.
Nick Turley, OpenAI's head of ChatGPT, is moving to a new role leading the company's enterprise products work. Turley led ChatGPT since its launch and helped grow it to more than 900 million weekly active users. Ashley Alexander, a former vice president of Instagram who led OpenAI's health products work, will now lead the company's consumer product unit.
Codex is increasingly powering OpenAI's consumer and enterprise offerings, which are gaining the ability to perform digital tasks autonomously on behalf of users. At the end of last year, Sam Altman declared a "code red" and said the company needed to refocus on the core ChatGPT experience. Since then, OpenAI has halted side projects including the video generator Sora and OpenAI for Science.
OpenAI leaders aim to simplify product offerings ahead of planning for an initial public offering later this year. Other OpenAI executives left the company last month, including Kevin Weil, head of its AI workspace for scientists; Bill Peebles, head of Sora; and Srinivas Narayanan, chief technology officer of enterprise applications.
