ST. LOUIS — Two people were killed and three others were injured after gunfire erupted during a large fight Friday night in the Carr Square neighborhood of St. Louis. Officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded just before 11 p.m. to a shooting in the 1500 block of Preservation Place.

Four people were shot in the blocks surrounding North 15th Street and Preservation Place and were taken to area hospitals. A 27-year-old man died from his injuries at the hospital. The three other male victims, aged 43, 41 and 26, were expected to survive. Preliminary information suggested a large fight led to shots being fired between two groups.

Metro Air Support spotted a vehicle fleeing the scene at high speed. SWAT officers tried to pull over the vehicle, but it continued to flee. The vehicle was stopped with spike strips on the McKinley Bridge, and two suspects were detained. A 21-year-old woman found in the backseat of the vehicle had a fatal gunshot wound and died inside the vehicle.

Beverly Hancock, a neighbor, described what she witnessed. "They just kept shooting. They were looking for somebody to die," Hancock said. "I saw a man literally on the ground. I also heard another man yelling, 'Help me, help me. I've been shot.'" she said.

Homicide detectives are handling the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact the Homicide Division at 314-444-5371. To remain anonymous and potentially receive a cash reward, people were asked to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis operates the Neighborhood Healing Network, which serves people who have experienced crime, violence or trauma. The Bullet Related Injury Clinic, a community-based clinic in St. Louis, was established to help people who are discharged from the emergency department after being shot.
