LAUREL, MARYLAND — Napoleon Solo won the 151st running of the Preakness Stakes at Laurel Park in Laurel, Maryland, passing pacesetter Taj Mahal near the top of the stretch to finish 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Iron Honor. Chip Honcho finished third in the $2 million race.

The victory delivered first Preakness wins for jockey Paco Lopez and trainer Chad Summers. Napoleon Solo, sent off at 7-1 race-time odds after opening at 8-1 on the morning line, paid $17.80 on a $2 bet.

Fourteen horses competed in the race, the largest field since 2011. Iron Honor had been the morning line favorite at 9-2 before going off at 8-1 at the start. Taj Mahal was sent off as the post-time favorite at 9-2, the longest odds for a post-time favorite since the race moved to its current distance in 1925.

Taj Mahal led the field early, covering the first quarter-mile in 22.66 seconds before being overtaken by Napoleon Solo near the top of the stretch. Taj Mahal finished tenth.

The 2026 Preakness was held at Laurel Park for the first time because of renovation work at Pimlico Race Course. The Pimlico project is expected to be completed next year. Attendance at Laurel Park was capped at 4,800.

Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo did not compete in the Preakness. The three horses that ran in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness were Ocelli, who finished fourth, Incredibolt, fifth, and Robusta, ninth.

Napoleon Solo entered the Preakness after winning the 2025 Champagne Stakes by 6 1/2 lengths. The colt had finished fifth in both the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Wood Memorial Stakes earlier in 2026.

The race was Lopez's second Preakness appearance. Brittany Russell had entered the race attempting to become the first female trainer to win the Preakness.
