SOUTH PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police found a man lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head on the 1100 block of Kater Street in South Philadelphia late Thursday night, and he remains in critical condition. Officers already in the area heard the shots shortly after 10:30 p.m.

"Upon arrival to Kater, they observed one male on the ground, unresponsive, shot in his head. They scooped that male and took him to the hospital," said Philadelphia Police Captain Timothy Stephan.

Surveillance video shows men walking along the sidewalk on the block before they ran as gunfire erupted moments later. Investigators recovered 14 .40-caliber shell casings, six 9mm casings, and two handguns at the scene. Investigators also found Ray-Ban Meta glasses at the scene.

A nearby home was struck multiple times, with bullet holes piercing its first and second floors, a window, and a fence. An abandoned car at the scene was hit by gunfire at least four times. Bullets were fired just inches from neighbors' front doors, and some people ducked for cover.

Neighbor Ramzi Alyan said he heard the gunfire erupt. "Big bangs of shots, like 25 after each other," Alyan said. Another neighbor said they heard a bunch of gunshots, saw a man face down on Kater Street, and within seconds saw five or six police officers arrive. A neighbor counted about 16 shell casings on the street and eight or nine additional casings around their house the next day.

"It is frightening, it is scary. You think you're safe when you are at home and crime comes right to your front door," said Cornelia Haymond.

Officials have not revealed any information on the suspects.
