NEW YORK — Sofia Coppola directed the documentary film "Marc by Sofia," her first documentary project. The film is a portrait of fashion designer Marc Jacobs that charts his progression from a Parsons School of Design graduate to creative director at Louis Vuitton.

The documentary follows Jacobs as he prepares for his 40th anniversary collection in spring 2024. "Marc by Sofia" is associated with film studio A24 and does not include traditional interview segments filmed as talking heads.

The film includes references to The Supremes, Elizabeth Taylor, and Barbra Streisand when exploring Jacobs's silhouettes. "Let's just get lost in Marc's world," Coppola said.

Coppola first met Jacobs in his New York studio in 1992 when she visited with her mother, Eleanor. "Too much pressure," Coppola said. "I wasn't, like, taken seriously."

Jacobs designed the satin dress that Coppola wore to accept the Academy Award for "Lost in Translation" original screenplay in 2004. "She was there to take whatever it was that I was going through," Jacobs said.

Coppola had previously directed Jacobs's Daisy fragrance advertising campaign. She interned at Chanel as a teenager and gained backstage experience in the fashion industry.

Coppola and Spike Jonze produced a fashion show for the X-Girl label on Mercer Street in New York in April 1994, when Coppola was 22 years old. Jacobs's 1992 grunge collection for Perry Ellis featured flannel fabrics on the runway.

Coppola has directed eight feature films as of 2024. She dropped out of the California Institute of the Arts and received negative reviews from critics for her performance in "The Godfather Part III."

Sofia Coppola was born on a sidewalk in New York. Marc Jacobs has launched three fashion labels as of 2024.

A 1997 feature in Seventeen magazine about Sofia Coppola's preferred Los Angeles shopping spots circulates on Instagram. A photograph by Bruce Weber in 2000 shows Sofia Coppola's Los Angeles office with a pink copy of Valley of the Dolls on the floor.
