TEHRAN — Mohammad Amin Biglari, a 19-year-old who disappeared during anti-government protests in Iran in early January 2026, was executed by hanging in Tehran, according to the news site of the Iranian judiciary and Iran Human Rights. Biglari worked at a hair salon and in the internet department of a chain store before his arrest.

After Biglari vanished, his father searched morgues in Tehran for a month, fearing he was among those killed in the government crackdown, according to a family member. A lawyer from the revolutionary court later contacted the family and informed them that Biglari had been arrested.

Biglari's father was not allowed to visit him at the Ghezel Hesar prison, located about 30 miles west of Tehran, the family member said. On his fourth phone call from prison, Biglari told his father that he had received a death sentence.

Since mid-March 2026, at least 28 executions have taken place in Iran, according to Iran Human Rights. Of those, 13 were of people arrested in connection with the January protests.

Since February 28, 2026, at least 4,000 people have been arrested on national security-related charges in Iran, according to the United Nations. Detainees arrested on those charges since that date have been forcibly disappeared, tortured, or subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, including coerced and sometimes televised confessions and mock executions, the U.N. said.

U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said: "I am appalled that — on top of the already severe impacts of the conflict — the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them by the authorities, in harsh and brutal ways."

Raha Bahreini, Iran researcher for Amnesty International, described the pattern of executions. "The Iranian authorities have used the context of armed conflict as a pretext to further intensify repression. Authorities have escalated their use of the death penalty as a tool of political repression. It's really unfathomable that as people were being bombed, they were also waking up almost daily to news of hangings of protesters and dissidents and others targeted for politically motivated reasons," she said.
