EL PASO, TEXAS — El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Championship League signed actor Cristo Fernández to a professional contract, the club announced on May 12, 2026. The 35-year-old, known for playing Dani Rojas on "Ted Lasso," had been on a two-month trial with the club, during which he trained and appeared in a preseason match earlier this year. The terms of the deal will not be disclosed per club policy.

Fernández began playing soccer at the youth level before stepping away in his mid-teens due to injuries. He pursued an acting career that included his role on the Apple TV+ comedy series before returning to competitive soccer through the trial with the Locomotive.

"Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart. I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC – the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates – for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one. This journey back to professional fútbol soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be," Fernández said in a statement released by the club.

Locomotive Head Coach Junior Gonzalez addressed the signing in the club's announcement. "Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line. His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club," Gonzalez said.
