INDIANAPOLIS — Katherine Legge will attempt to race in her fifth Indianapolis 500 on May 24, 2026, and become the first woman to complete "The Double" by also competing in NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, that evening. Her primary sponsor, e.l.f. Cosmetics, announced the attempt in a news release early Wednesday.
"Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt 'The Double,' and I do not take that opportunity lightly," Legge said in the release. "I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it. This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourse.l.f., taking risks and trying to do something unique."
Only five drivers — John Andretti, Kurt Busch, Robby Gordon, Kyle Larson and Tony Stewart — have attempted to drive in both races on the same day. Stewart is the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles in one day, finishing sixth at Indianapolis and third in Charlotte in 2001.
Larson attempted the feat in both 2024 and 2025. In 2024, he finished 18th in a rain-delayed Indianapolis 500 and was unable to reach Charlotte before the Coca-Cola 600 was called due to rain. In 2025, he lost control in Turn 2 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Lap 92 and crashed, then after flying to Charlotte was involved in a wreck on Lap 246 of the Coca-Cola 600.
Legge, who was born in Guildford, England, first raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 2012, finishing 22nd, and was part of the field in 2013, 2023 and 2024. She has competed in eight NASCAR Cup Series races over the past two years, including seven starts in 2025. She finished 17th in the 2025 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and 35th at Watkins Glen on Sunday in her only Cup race in 2026.
She will attempt to secure her spot in the Indianapolis 500 field when qualifications start on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The fastest 15 drivers on Saturday will return on Sunday, May 17, 2026, to try to put their car on the pole for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500. Qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600 is scheduled for 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
