FORT WAYNE, IND. — The Fort Wayne Police Department on May 1, 2026 released critical incident body camera footage of the fatal shooting of Jacob Leckenby by officers responding to a domestic disturbance in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Sept. 22, 2025 shooting was reviewed by the Allen County Prosecutor's Office before the video was made public.

Officers were dispatched around 5:55 p.m. that day to apartment 308 after a caller reported that a woman was being beaten inside. A woman at the scene told officers that Leckenby had returned to the apartment after she told him to leave earlier and had forced his way inside by pushing through the locked door.

The body camera video shows officers encountering a man armed with a knife. Officers announced their presence before the confrontation escalated.

The footage shows officers backing away as one officer was stabbed by the suspect during the confrontation. Officers fired shots at the suspect after he refused commands to drop the knife.

Medics who had staged nearby immediately entered the apartment to render aid to Leckenby, who died at the scene. The injured officer was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Allen County Prosecutor's Office determined the officers' use of force in the shooting was justified and found no evidence of criminal liability. The office said officers reasonably believed force was necessary to prevent serious bodily injury or death to themselves and others.

Both the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police determined the officers' actions were consistent with department policy. The department said the video release followed the completion of the Allen County Prosecutor's Office review of the incident.
