Seattle police were searching for a suspect Sunday evening after a University of Washington student was found dead inside a school-affiliated apartment building. The victim is believed to be a 19-year-old transgender female, Detective Eric Muñoz said.

UW police officers were called to the Nordheim Court campus student housing complex at about 10:10 p.m. and found a deceased victim in a laundry room. A homicide was reported at Nordheim Court Apartments building 7 on 25th Ave. NE around 10:20 p.m. The UW Police Department said the death is being investigated as a homicide.

The circumstances leading up to the killing are under investigation, and no arrests have been made. Officers are actively searching for the suspect.

Nordheim Court residents were told via the UW Alert system to stay indoors and lock their windows and doors while police investigated the scene. The alert directed people living in the complex to remain inside their homes and secure their windows and doors until the scene was cleared. At around 12:56 a.m., residents were notified through the school alert that they no longer needed to remain inside their homes and that a death investigation remains ongoing.

Police are searching for a Black man between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8 wearing a vest with a button-up shirt and blue jeans. The suspect was described as having a slim build, black hair and a beard, and was last seen wearing a button-up shirt under a dark blue vest. Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to contact police as the investigation continues.
