IOWA CITY, IOWA — U.S. marshals captured Damarian M. Jones, 17, of Cedar Rapids, near Atlanta, Georgia, on May 11, 2026, in connection with a shooting near the University of Iowa campus. Jones faces five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault.

Jones is accused of opening fire on April 19, 2026, along a pedestrian mall lined with shops, bars and restaurants near the university in Iowa City. He allegedly fired six shots toward a crowd.

Five people were injured in the shooting. One person was shot in the head, one was struck in the arm and chest, two were hit in at least one leg, and one was struck in the stomach. One victim remained hospitalized as of May 11, 2026.

Jones was held in the Clayton County Jail in Georgia pending a hearing on extradition to Iowa. The charges against Jones — five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault — stem from the April 19 incident in Iowa City. The pedestrian mall where the shooting occurred is lined with shops, bars and restaurants near the University of Iowa campus.
