DURANGO — Kevin González, an 18-year-old U.S. citizen, died Sunday afternoon in Durango, Mexico, surrounded by his family. González had been reunited with his parents in Durango on Saturday, one day after a federal judge ordered their expedited release from immigration detention.

At a federal court hearing on Thursday, a judge ordered the release of González's parents, Isidoro González Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, the following day so they could travel to Mexico to see their son. His aunt and brother confirmed his death late Sunday afternoon.

González was born in Chicago and had been living in Mexico with his parents, who had been deported years earlier. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with colon cancer in Chicago after seeking medical care for ongoing stomach ailments. The cancer had spread to his stomach and lungs, and doctors said treatment was no longer viable. Physicians recommended that he receive comfort care at home until the end of his life.

After the diagnosis, González's parents attempted to cross the border to see him in Chicago but were taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and detained in Arizona. While they were detained, González flew back to Mexico and was in the care of his grandmother. González's grandmother said his parents had filed humanitarian requests to enter the U.S. but were denied. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Ramírez Amaya attempted to re-enter the United States on two separate occasions before being caught, with the most recent attempt earlier this year along with her husband.

The Mexican consulate and multiple lawmakers advocated for the family's reunion ahead of the judge's order.

On Saturday, González hugged his mother in Durango. González spent his final moments surrounded by family and friends. "I didn't imagine seeing him so thin, the way he is," Ramírez Amaya said after the reunion.
