SOUTH ASIA — Pakistan publicly unveiled the Fatah-3 supersonic cruise missile through its Army Rocket Force Command in January 2026, presenting what it described as its first acknowledged operational supersonic cruise missile. The system was displayed alongside counter-UAV systems and long-range fires.

The Fatah-3 is a road-mobile, twin-canister system capable of speeds between Mach 2.5 and 4. It carries a warhead of 240 to 400 kilograms and has a strike range of roughly 290 to 450 kilometers. The missile enables both land-attack and anti-ship missions using terrain-hugging and sea-skimming flight profiles.

The Fatah-3 is a possible localized derivative of China's HD-1 missile developed by Guangdong Hongda. The missile's supersonic speed and low-altitude approach compress interception timelines for air-defense systems, complicating radar tracking and layered defensive responses against fixed infrastructure, naval targets and mobile battlefield assets.

The unveiling reflects a shift in Pakistan's doctrine toward survivable, distributed precision-strike warfare below the nuclear threshold. The Fatah-3 directly challenges India's longstanding advantage in supersonic strike systems anchored by the Russian-Indian BrahMos missile, narrowing India's key advantage in regional conventional warfare.

The HD-1 and the BrahMos occupy a similar supersonic anti-ship missile niche but differ in design priorities. The HD-1 emphasizes affordability, lighter weight and fuel efficiency through its solid-fuel ramjet. The BrahMos emphasizes kinetic strike power, multi-platform deployment, stealth features, advanced INS/GPS and active/passive radar guidance, heavier payload options and longer ranges of 300 to 500 kilometers depending on variant.

In the May 2025 skirmishes over Kashmir, India deployed the BrahMos to target Pakistan's Nur Khan Airbase. That deployment illustrated the role supersonic cruise missiles play in sub-nuclear conflict between the two countries.

In a Center for Land Warfare Studies report, analyst Mandip Singh said "pre-conventional conflict" involves non-contact, deep, and calibrated missile, rocket, and drone attacks to offset India's conventional superiority while staying below the threshold of nuclear war. Singh's framework describes the operational niche the Fatah-3 is designed to fill.
