Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the administration supports all measures, including a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax, to lower fuel prices for Americans. "All measures that can be taken to lower the price at the pump and lower the prices for Americans, this administration is in support of," Wright said.

The federal gas tax stands at about 18 cents a gallon. Democrats in Congress introduced a bill in March to temporarily suspend the tax until October.

Gas prices hit a national average of $4.52 per gallon on Sunday, an increase of more than 50% since the start of the Iran war, according to data from motor club AAA. Eight weeks later, prices continued to climb and showed no immediate sign of returning to prewar levels as Iran maintained its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Wright declined to speculate whether the national average could reach $5 per gallon. "I can't predict the price of energy in the short term or even the medium term, but what we're doing is ending a 47-year conflict Iran has fought," he said.

Wright pointed to U.S. oil and natural gas production as evidence that the country is in a strong position and said the administration was open to a range of policy options to ease costs for consumers.

In March, Wright told Meet the Press there was a "very good chance" gas prices could drop below $3 per gallon by the summer. He predicted at the time that "Americans will feel it for a few more weeks," Wright said.
