Sony Interactive Entertainment has deployed artificial intelligence development tools across its first-party studios to accelerate game production and broaden the range of content available to players, executives said at a recent corporate briefing. The company described the tools as means of automating repetitive workflows in quality assurance, 3D modeling, and animation.

"We expect to see a meaningful increase in the volume and diversity of content available to players in the near future," said Hideaki Nishino, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. He said the tools are lowering barriers to creation, shortening development cycles, and enabling more creators to enter the market.

One of the deployed systems, a 3D animation tool called Mockingbird, allows artists to convert raw motion capture data into in-game animation at greatly increased speed. "Animation work that would have taken hours can now be completed in a fraction of a second," he said.

The company has also applied machine learning tools that process videos of real hairstyles and apply them to automated animation models capable of rendering hundreds of strands, replacing a previous process in which animators placed each strand individually. Development teams have built prototypes featuring non-player characters with AI-generated personalities intended to create a dynamic world for players to explore. Teams have had to fine-tune generic AI models to address issues of consistency and controllability. A pilot partnership with publisher Bandai Namco identified gains in speed and productivity per person in video production.

"AI-enabled efficiency will lead to more innovative and ambitious projects—projects that were previously difficult to pursue due to constraints of cost and time," said Hiroki Totoki, Sony Group President and CEO. He added that "these models can, in some cases, help enable highly sophisticated and realistic outputs which were not feasible before due to production time constraints." Totoki also said, "AI is an amplifier of human imagination, and great content comes from deep personal experiences, unique perspectives, and a strong inner motivation to express something meaningful."

Nishino said the technology also has applications on the consumer-facing side of the business. "AI models can already outperform manual curation when suggesting new games players might enjoy," he said. Totoki added that AI could assist players in discovering content that matches their interests.

Sony maintains a core principle that human creativity must remain at the center of its creative efforts. "AI is meant to augment developers' capabilities, not to replace them, and humans will always be responsible for the vision, the design, and the emotional impact of our games," Nishino said.
