LONDON — A jury at the Central Criminal Court in London on May 7, 2026, convicted Peter Wai and Bill Yuen of violating the National Security Act by assisting China's spy agency. Wai is a U.K. border official and Yuen is a former Hong Kong police officer.

Both men are Chinese and British nationals. Wai is 38 years old and Yuen is 65 years old.

According to prosecutors, the two posed as legitimate officers or intelligence agents to conduct surveillance. They gathered information about Hong Kong pro-democracy supporters and others deemed persons of interest, prosecutors said.

The court heard that Wai and Yuen operated under the direction of China's spy agency, prosecutors said. The surveillance activity targeted individuals connected to the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said the two men gathered information on those individuals and reported it to the agency.

The National Security Act charges against Wai and Yuen followed an investigation into their alleged activities on behalf of China's intelligence services, prosecutors said. Wai, in his role as a U.K. border official, and Yuen, a former Hong Kong police officer, used their backgrounds to pose as legitimate officers or intelligence agents, according to the prosecution.
