INDIANA — Former President Donald Trump called for the primary defeat of Indiana state senators who opposed his mid-decade redistricting effort as voters headed to the polls in the state's May 2026 primary for state Senate and state House seats. Trump-aligned dark money groups have spent upwards of $7 million on television advertisements in Indiana this year, according to an AdImpact tally.

The majority of that spending targeted Republicans who allied with Democrats in the December redistricting vote, the tally showed. Total ad spending in Indiana's 2026 primary contest reached $25.5 million, with Democratic advertisers accounting for less than 1%.

Trump's redistricting plan aimed to break up Indiana's first and seventh congressional districts. In the final days before the primary, Trump issued a call to his TruthSocial followers to vote for a "true Maga Warrior" and included a link to voting locations on his party's campaign engine, "SwampTheVote." He urged that every one of the state senators who opposed his redistricting effort should be primaried.

Half of Indiana's 50 state Senate seats and all 100 state House seats are on the ballot in 2026. The races cover a wide range of districts across the state.

Among the targeted incumbents is Jim Buck, a state senator from Kokomo who has served in the chamber for 18 years and is facing a Trump-endorsed challenger. One political advertisement described Buck as "old, pathetic, liberal." Buck said, "Now I've got over $1m against me in one race."

In the state House, first-term Republican Representative Greg Goode of Terre Haute faces a race in district 38 against city council member Brenda Wilson, who received backing from Trump and Senator Mike Braun. Goode voted against Trump's mid-decade redistricting push. At a town hall event Goode hosted, 71 people spoke out against the redistricting revision and none spoke in favor. Also running in district 38 is Alexandra Wilson, a candidate who shares her last name with Brenda Wilson but is not related.
