LOS ANGELES — Former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for reelection on Monday. Harris and Bass have known each other for more than two decades and share a history working together on homelessness and child welfare issues.

"Mayor Karen Bass is the leader Los Angeles needs right now. She has done what so many said couldn't be done — the first ever two-year decline in homelessness, reducing crime to levels this city hasn't seen since the 1960s, and refusing to back down when the federal government came after our neighbors. She has my full support for re-election," Harris said.

Bass was sworn in as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles in 2022 by Harris. At the 2020 Democratic National Convention, Bass spoke about working with Harris more than a decade earlier on youth homelessness and child welfare system improvements, when Bass led the California Assembly and Harris was a state prosecutor.

In the city of Los Angeles, unsheltered homelessness decreased by 7.9% and sheltered homelessness increased by 4.7%, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Homicides in Los Angeles dropped by 19% in 2025 compared with 2024, and the total was the lowest since 1966, according to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.

A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll in March found that 25% of voters supported Bass for reelection, 17% supported Nithya Raman, 14% supported Spencer Pratt and 25% were undecided. A separate figure from the same poll showed 15% of Angelenos supported Pratt for mayor. The poll also found that 13% of Angelenos had no opinion about Bass, and that 56% of Angelenos viewed Bass unfavorably following her leadership during the Palisades fire.

Both Pratt and Raman raised more money than Bass through April 18, according to fundraising disclosures filed with the city's Ethics Commission. Bass had nearly $2.3 million in her campaign bank account, having started fundraising for reelection two years ago.
