WASHINGTON D.C. — President Barack Obama hosted a farewell dance party in the White House on January 6, 2017, drawing campaign donors, staffers, and entertainment figures to mark the end of his administration. Guests included Barry Diller, Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Paul McCartney, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, and Magic Johnson.

Questlove served as music director for the event. Stevie Wonder and Solange performed for the crowd, and Michelle Obama led attendees in performing the Electric Slide. As dawn approached, chicken and waffles were served to the remaining guests.

Chance the Rapper posted a video at 4:33 a.m. documenting the night. "There was laughing, there was loving, there was hugs. It was historic, it was Black, it was beautiful." he said.

Singer Janelle Monáe, who attended the gathering, said, "No way I'm getting invited back to this house anytime soon."

Sharon Malone, a doctor who attended the party, described the mood among guests as the night unfolded. "You realized that an era was coming to an end, and it was the last moment of joy we were going to have in that White House," she said. Malone said attendees approached the gathering with the transition in mind, adding, "We were making the best of a bad situation."

The party extended into the early morning hours, with guests dancing through the night in the East Room. Stevie Wonder and Solange took turns performing as Questlove directed the music throughout the evening. Michelle Obama's decision to lead the Electric Slide drew participation from attendees across the room. The gathering brought together figures from entertainment, business, and the Obamas' broader network of supporters for a final celebration before the January 20 inauguration of the incoming administration.
