TINA — At least 17 people were killed and 123 injured in attacks by the Rapid Support Forces on the town of Tina along Sudan's border with Chad on Monday. Sixty-six people were in serious condition after the attacks.

The Rapid Support Forces expanded their attacks on military areas in Tina, but Sudanese troops repelled them and forced them to withdraw, according to a military update. Tina is one of the last areas still held by the Sudanese military in the Darfur region.

People injured in the attacks were treated by MSF teams and Chadian health services at a new hospital in Tine, Chad. Doctors are treating patients without water or electricity, relying on generators and solar panels. Medicine stockpiles at the hospital are running low because of the influx of new patients.

The Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese military have been at war since April 2023. A power struggle between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023 escalated into open fighting in Khartoum and other parts of the country. The conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, according to U.N. figures.

Most of the Darfur region has been under Rapid Support Forces control since October 2023. Major fighting in the Sudan war has occurred in the Darfur and Kordofan regions. Deadly drone attacks have been frequently reported in Kordofan.

Chad closed its border with Sudan until further notice last month to limit the spread of conflict into its territory. Chad closed its border for a period shortly after the April 2023 outbreak of fighting. The Tine crossing was used as the sole route for cross-border humanitarian aid and deliveries from Chad when the Adre crossing was temporarily closed.
