SIRIK, IRAN — A bulk carrier was attacked by multiple small craft off the coast of Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, according to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. The incident took place 11 nautical miles (20 km) west of Sirik, Iran, UKMTO said.

The vessel was northbound at the time of the attack and was not identified in the UKMTO report, the agency said. All crew on board were reported safe, according to UKMTO.

Sirik is a port town located on the Iranian side of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf and is one of the world's most active shipping lanes. UKMTO reported no environmental impact from the attack.

UKMTO, which is operated by the British Royal Navy and monitors maritime security in the region, issued the report as part of its routine advisories to commercial shipping. The agency covers an area that includes the Red Sea, the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean. Incidents in these waters are reported by mariners to UKMTO, which then distributes alerts to the wider shipping community.
