TEXAS — Republican Brett Ligon won the May 2, 2026, special election to fill the vacant Texas Senate District 4 seat, defeating Democrat Ron Angeletti. The seat had been vacant since Brandon Creighton departed in October 2025 after being tapped in 2025 to serve as chancellor of the Texas Tech University System.

Ligon, the former district attorney of Montgomery County, will hold the seat through January 2027, when the Texas Legislature is scheduled to reconvene for its next regular session. Angeletti, an educator and small-business owner, was the only other candidate on the ballot.

Texas Senate District 4 includes all of Chambers County and parts of Harris, Galveston, Montgomery, and Jefferson counties. The district voted for President Donald Trump by a 34-point margin in the 2024 presidential election.

"The voters of SD4 have delivered a clear message tonight. Conservative values and Republican dominance in Texas are alive and well." Ligon said in a victory statement following the election results.

In the same statement, Ligon characterized the campaign as a contested race that drew outside involvement. "Democrats from Texas and all over the country threw everything they had at us. Democrat politicians were here today in full force, campaigning hard for my opponent. As if we had been flying the 'Come and Take It' flag – they tried – and they failed." he said.

Ligon and Angeletti are set for a rematch in November 2026 for a full four-year term in the District 4 seat. The special election seat runs only through January 2027, meaning the November contest will determine who holds the position for the full term beginning that month.
