SINGAPORE — Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, an 18-year-old student, was charged in a Singapore court on April 24 with mischief and public nuisance after a video circulated online showing him licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine and returning it to the dispenser. He had not entered a plea as of the reporting date.

The offense allegedly took place on March 12 at a shopping mall in Singapore. The video spread rapidly after surfacing online, prompting IJooz, the company that operates the vending machine, to file a police report.

Following the incident, IJooz sanitized the dispenser and replaced all 500 straws in the machine. The company said it would upgrade its machines to include measures such as individually packaged straws and straw compartments that unlock only after a transaction is completed.

Maximilien was granted court permission to travel to Manila from May 2 to May 25 for a school trip required for his graduation. He is studying at a French business school in Singapore. He is due back in court on May 29.

Under Singapore law, mischief carries a penalty of up to two years in prison or a fine, or both. Public nuisance carries a penalty of up to three months in prison or a fine, or both. Singapore regulates public behavior and cleanliness, including restrictions on chewing gum and penalties for littering and vandalism.

The charges relate to the vending machine straw incident, which IJooz confirmed by filing a police report after the video circulated. Lawyers for Maximilien declined to comment on the case when contacted.
