JERUSALEM — Archbishop Atallah Hanna called for international action to stop attacks against Christian institutions in Jerusalem after Israeli police on Thursday released video showing a man assaulting a nun in the city earlier in the week. The footage, recorded Tuesday, showed the assault and led to the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect.

The video showed a man following a nun and pushing her to the ground, causing a head injury. The man briefly walked away before returning to kick her as she lay on the ground. Bystanders then intervened.

"The attack on a nun in the city of Jerusalem comes as violations against Christian institutions in the city escalate," Hanna said. "This reflects increasing concerns about the future of the historic Christian presence in the Holy Land."

The nun is a 48-year-old researcher at Jerusalem's French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research and did not wish to speak publicly, according to Father Olivier Poquillon. Israeli police arrested a 36-year-old man suspected of carrying out the assault.

Israel's Foreign Ministry described the attack as a shameful act. "In a city sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, we remain committed to protecting all communities and ensuring those responsible for violence are held accountable," the ministry said.

Attacks on Christian communities in occupied East Jerusalem and Israel have increased in recent years, according to the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue. Churches in Jerusalem have repeatedly called on Israeli authorities to act to stop attacks on Christian communities.
