AL-MUGHAYYIR — Aws al-Nasaan, 14, was shot dead by an Israeli settler in broad daylight in the village of Al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Construction worker Jihad Abu Naim, 32, was also killed in the attack, which took place just after noon.

One video from the scene shows a bearded man in an Israeli military uniform firing down the hill toward the village school, crouching to get a better angle and continuing to shoot. A separate video shows bullets hitting the school's east wall. Another shows al-Nasaan's body on the ground as his friends shout for help.

The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that the shooter was a reservist soldier and said it had launched an investigation into the attack. The reservist was suspended from reserve duty pending the conclusion of the investigation, and his weapon was confiscated.

Classes at the school were canceled for one week. School principal Bassem Abu Assaf, who is responsible for 460 students, described the incident in an interview. "The shooting was crazy, just crazy, nonstop shooting," he said.

Abu Assaf said the attack had affected the school. "This is supposed to be a safe place," he said.

Israeli settlers and security forces have killed at least 42 Palestinians so far in 2026, according to United Nations data. Israeli human rights group Yesh Din documented nearly 400 incidents of settler violence in the occupied West Bank in the first 40 days of the Iran war, including shootings, beatings, arson, land destruction, livestock theft and intimidation.

"The root reason is that everyone is looking elsewhere. The world is distracted," Yesh Din CEO Ziv Stahl said.
