WASHINGTON D.C. — King Charles III presented President Donald Trump with a polished brass bell bearing the name "Trump" during a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday, April 28, in Washington, D.C. The bell had hung from the conning tower of HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine launched from a United Kingdom shipyard in 1944.

Trump greeted the King at the South Portico of the White House ahead of the dinner. The King delivered remarks during the evening that touched on the wartime history shared by the United States and the United Kingdom.

In those remarks, the King offered the gift with a quip about future communication between the two governments. "And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring," King Charles III said.

The King also referenced past comments by the president about the role of the United States in the Second World War. "You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that, if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French," he said.

During the same address, the King made reference to the current rift over the Iran war and to the historical echo of the 1956 Suez crisis. The remarks came as part of a broader address touching on the long alliance between the two nations.
