LUMPKIN, GEORGIA — Denny Adán González, a 33-year-old detainee, died Tuesday night at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, in what is being investigated as a suicide. He is the 18th person to die in 2026 in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to a statement from CoreCivic, which operates the facility, staff called a medical emergency at around 10:26 p.m. after finding González unresponsive in his living area. Emergency medical services arrived and attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced deceased before being transported from the facility, the company said. According to a notification to Congress, he was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m.

González was previously deported in 2020 and re-entered the United States in 2022. He was detained by ICE in January of this year after being arrested last December on charges of assault on a female and domestic violence.

According to the congressional notification, González is the fourth person to die by suicide inside the Stewart facility. In 2017, a Panamanian immigrant died inside a solitary confinement cell at the center. In 2018, a Mexican man died by suicide inside a solitary unit there. Last summer, a 45-year-old man from Mexico died by suicide at the same facility.

ICE said in a statement: "ICE is committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments. Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout their stay."

Last year, ICE recorded 31 detainee deaths, a two-decade high that nearly surpassed the record of 34 deaths set in 2004. According to a CBS News analysis of government data, 2025 had the highest ICE detainee death rate since 2020, at 5.6 people per 10,000 detainees.

Earlier this year, ICE's detention population rose to more than 70,000 people. The detention population decreased to around 60,000 last month.

Those who have died in ICE custody this year include an Afghan refugee who worked alongside American military forces in Afghanistan and a Mexican teenager. Detainees who died had been previously arrested on charges including theft, fraud and resisting an officer.
