THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA — President Donald Trump will deliver a speech at a rally in The Villages, Florida, on Friday as part of his effort to promote his economic policies to voters ahead of the midterm elections. The retirement community has voted for Trump in all three of his electoral bids.

The Villages, founded in the 1970s, is a master-planned community spanning 30,000 acres, three counties and four zip codes, and is the largest retirement community in the world. Known for sunshine, socializing and recreational activities for residents over the age of 55, it includes five squares and more than 3,000 clubs. Most residents get around in personalized, colorful golf carts.

Last month, nearly 7,000 people participated in a No Kings protest against Trump across two Villages locations, according to local reports.

Bill Knudson, president of the Villages Democratic Club, who moved to the community four years ago, said the choice of rally location had required organizers to seek out Democratic residents. "Nothing turns out Democrats like Trump," Knudson said. "They had to go out of their way to find us."

Maddy Bacher, 63, a Democrat originally from Connecticut, started a Democratic pickleball team after politics became too divisive following the Covid pandemic, beginning a weekly game frequented only by fellow Democratic voters. Her husband started a Democratic club golf group. Other residents of the community include Terri Emery, 62, who along with Scott Morgan supports Trump and has tickets to see him speak.

Tom Samson, 81, a Pittsburgh native and retired pest control business owner, described what he viewed as the source of Trump's appeal. "What really attracted most people is his no filter. He doesn't have a filter and says whatever's on his mind, and he's not a politician," Samson said.

Sharlene, a Trump supporter, said: "He's a man that does do what he says he's going to do, and he may not be diplomatic, and he may not be charming, may not be politically correct, but he's doing what every president before him has promised to do when they're out there campaigning but have never done."

At one of the community's five squares, live music playing covers of "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" sounded as residents danced.
