WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said the U.S. military presence in Germany is under review and that he may consider withdrawing American troops from bases in Spain and Italy. He made the remarks one day after first disclosing the German review, and criticized the two NATO allies in sharp terms.

"Why shouldn't I? Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible." Trump said.

He said the United States did not need help with Iran because Spain and Italy were not there when needed.

Turning to Germany, Trump said Chancellor Friedrich Merz should focus on fixing his own country and on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and should spend less time interfering in matters related to Iran.

Trump did not specify a timeline for any decision on troop levels in Germany, Spain or Italy, nor did he detail which bases could be affected by a withdrawal.
