VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Britney Spears was charged in California with a single misdemeanor count of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. Her arraignment is set for Monday.

Spears was arrested on March 4 after she was pulled over for driving her black BMW fast and erratically on US 101 near her home, according to the California Highway Patrol. She appeared to be impaired, took a series of field sobriety tests, and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and taken to a Ventura County jail. She was released on bail the day after her arrest.

Police completed their investigation and presented it to prosecutors on March 23. The criminal complaint does not specify what kind of alcohol or drugs or what amount Spears is accused of having used. Because the charge is a misdemeanor, she is not required to appear in court and her attorney can make the appearance for her.

The Ventura County District Attorney's Office said that with DUI cases, if there was a low blood alcohol level and no crash or injury, defendants often reach a resolution when they address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol treatment program. Under the standard DUI offer, a defendant is placed on probation for 12 months, receives credit for time spent in custody, is required to complete a DUI class, and must pay state-mandated fines and fees.

Spears voluntarily checked into a substance abuse treatment facility in April. A representative said, "Hopefully, this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life."

Spears, 44, is known as the Princess of Pop and was a defining superstar of the 1990s and 2000s with hits such as "Toxic," "Gimme More," and "I'm a Slave 4 U." Most of her albums have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, including two diamond titles: "Baby One More Time" (1999) and "Oops! I Did It Again" (2000). She has released a few collaborative singles since her last full album in 2016, and released a memoir titled "The Woman in Me."

In 2008, Spears was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship run primarily by her father and his lawyers that controlled her personal and financial decisions. She was freed from that arrangement in 2021, ending the 13-year conservatorship that legally stripped her of the authority to make personal and financial decisions.
