KYIV, UKRAINE — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking details from U.S. President Donald Trump about a short-term ceasefire proposed by Russia to coincide with the May 9 Victory Day holiday. Zelenskyy said in a post on Telegram that Ukraine is proposing a longer-term ceasefire instead.

"We have instructed our representatives to contact the United States president's team and clarify the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term ceasefire," Zelenskyy said. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin discussed a ceasefire for the May 9 holiday during a phone call with Trump on Wednesday.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the May 9 ceasefire to Trump during a phone call on Wednesday. The proposal was timed to align with Russia's Victory Day commemoration.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said no definite decision on a ceasefire had been made and that Putin would decide on the specific terms. "For now, no concrete decision has been made," Peskov said. Putin would determine the specific terms of any ceasefire agreement, Peskov added.

The U.S. administration has not commented on Russia's ceasefire proposal. Zelenskyy made his request for clarification through his representatives, who were instructed to contact Trump's team directly, he said on Telegram.
