WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Justice Department released Jeffrey Epstein case files in early March 2026, leading to the arrests of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The files also prompted resignations of Kathryn Ruemmler and Brad Karp.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III, was arrested on February 19. The DOJ files showed that in 2010 and 2011, when he served as a U.K. trade envoy, emails revealed he forwarded official reports on his work visits to Jeffrey Epstein.

Peter Mandelson was arrested on February 23 following search warrants at two addresses, including in Camden. DOJ files appeared to show Mandelson forwarded sensitive government information to Jeffrey Epstein while serving as business secretary under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The emails included information about a proposed tax change, the sale of government assets after the U.K. financial crisis, and advance notice of a planned EU bailout of Greece. The files appeared to show financial transfers from Epstein to Mandelson and Mandelson's husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. In September 2025, Mandelson was dismissed from his role as the United Kingdom's ambassador to the United States after documents about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Kathryn Ruemmler resigned as Goldman Sachs's chief legal officer and general counsel effective June 30. The DOJ files showed Ruemmler offered Jeffrey Epstein advice on his legal troubles, including lawsuits brought by women accusing him of sexual abuse. The files showed she referred to Jeffrey Epstein as "Uncle Jeffrey" and received a $9,350 Hermes handbag from him. Ruemmler said, "It was my duty to put Goldman Sachs' interests first."

Brad Karp resigned as chairman of Paul Weiss. Emails in the DOJ files showed Karp worked with Jeffrey Epstein to surveil a woman in a dispute with one of his clients. The files also showed Karp visited Jeffrey Epstein's Manhattan mansion and asked him to help Karp's son get a job with director Woody Allen. Karp also stepped down from the board of trustees of Union College.

King Charles III said, "The authorities have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation" and "The law must take its course." Peter Mandelson denied any illegal activity and said "A lapse in our collective judgment" described his husband accepting funds from Jeffrey Epstein. In February 2026, Mandelson resigned from the British Labour Party.
