PERSIAN GULF — U.S.-Iran talks scheduled in Pakistan fell apart on Saturday, just over eight weeks after the United States and Israel began a war with Iran.

"Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none!" President Donald Trump said in a social media post.

Iran holds a stockpile of around 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, an amount that could provide enough material to make 10 to 11 nuclear weapons. The level of enrichment carried out by Iran has no credible civilian use. The enriched uranium remains buried underground at one or more of Iran's main enrichment sites. Iran had denied that it wanted to build a bomb, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa against nuclear weapons.

Both the U.S. and Iran have economic incentives to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 million barrels of oil normally flow daily. There is no alternative to the strait given the geography of the region's oil fields and the Persian Gulf.

The East-West pipeline, built in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq War, runs from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil fields to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea coast. The pipeline was targeted several times by Iranian missiles and drones and now operates at its full capacity of 7 million barrels a day.

The U.S. has used more than 1,000 Tomahawk missiles in the war while producing about 100 Tomahawks per year. It has also used about 200 THAAD missile interceptors, representing about 50% of its stockpile, while buying about 11 THAAD interceptors annually. Diversions of THAAD systems have occurred from Europe and East Asia. The Pentagon wants to invest another $30 billion into critical munitions, including interceptors.

Iran does not appear able to launch major cyberattacks that would seriously disrupt Americans' daily lives. Pro-Iranian hacktivist groups have increased attacks targeting medical device maker Stryker, the social network Bluesky, and the Los Angeles Metro. The damage from those attacks is not on the level feared from Chinese campaigns like Volt Typhoon and Salt Typhoon.
