SAN FRANCISCO — Block laid off more than 4,000 employees. The layoffs affected roughly 40% of the company’s employees.

Following the February 2026 layoffs, Block rehired at least four employees who had been laid off. Some employees were rehired soon after the February 2026 layoffs, while others rejoined later in March 2026.

The rehired employees came from multiple departments. Those departments included engineering. Those departments also included recruiting.

Andrew Harvard, a design engineer, accepted Block’s offer to return to the company. “They offered me the opportunity to return, and I’ve accepted,” Harvard said. Block leadership told Harvard that his layoff was due to a clerical error.

Matt Morris was rehired after his manager advocated on his behalf to the company’s CEO.

Block also rehired creative strategy lead Chane Rennie.

Block rehired some employees from Richard Hesse’s team. Hesse, a technical lead, wrote that his entire team was laid off during the mass layoffs.

Hesse joined Block when the company acquired Weebly. At Weebly, Hesse was director of network operations.

Block CEO Jack Dorsey commented on decisions related to the layoffs and rehiring. “I accept that we may have gotten some of them wrong, and we’ve built in flexibility to account for that, and do the right thing for our customers,” Dorsey said.
