BLOUNT COUNTY, TENNESSEE — Six candidates will appear on the ballot in the Blount County, Tennessee, mayoral primary on May 5 following the decision of incumbent Ed Mitchell not to seek re-election. Jared Anderson, Brad Bowers, Shawn Carter Sr., Brett Coulter, Jerome Moon and Brian Thomson are competing for the seat Mitchell has held for 16 years.

Thomson is running unopposed on the Democratic primary ballot. Moon was unavailable for an interview by the deadline due to the ongoing legislative session, according to a press secretary.

Anderson said he wants to make improvements in Blount County and is focused on the years ahead. "We've got some challenges and opportunities over the next several years and I want someone who's going to be energetic, who's going to be conservative, and who's going to do the job well, every day." he said.

Bowers said he brings good leadership qualities to the role of county mayor. "I think that helps me and qualifies me, and gives me a good perspective to be the county mayor." Bowers said.

Coulter pointed to his 40-year public education career as preparation for the position. "Being the County Mayor is going to extend that opportunity for me. And this is an opportunity to serve the county as a whole." he said.

Carter Sr. said he wants to give back to his community. Thomson said he is looking to make a positive change in Blount County.
