CHICAGO — A suspect opened fire on police officers transporting a prisoner at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital on Chicago's North Side on Saturday morning, killing one officer and wounding another. The suspect was taken into custody around noon following a manhunt.

Two officers were shot during the incident, with one struck in the head. The wounded officer was in critical condition, and the second officer died as a result of the shooting.

The shooting occurred while officers were transporting a prisoner to or from the hospital. According to the hospital, the suspect was wanded upon arrival in accordance with Endeavor Health public safety weapon detection protocols, opened fire on officers, exited the building and was later apprehended. The suspect had already been in police custody when transported to the hospital for treatment.

The hospital campus was placed on lockdown after the shooting, and law enforcement officers responded to the scene. Hospital officials said shortly after noon that they were not aware of any active threat within the hospital and that patients and team members were safe.

In dispatch audio recorded during the response, a police dispatcher said, "I have everybody that I can have coming guys. I have everybody I can coming. What I need you guys to do is let me know where you are exactly what you're doing, so that I can keep track of everything."

Chicago City Council member Andre Vasquez said the area around the hospital remained blocked off and urged residents to stay away. "THIS IS AN ACTIVE SITUATION! Please shelter in place if you are in the surrounding area or avoid the area," Vasquez said.

Chicago alderman Gilbert Villegas commented on the shooting. "This is a horrible situation all around," Villegas said. "Thank you to CPD for the quick response and swift action."
