WASHINGTON DC — U.S. President Donald Trump said next week's state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla could help repair relations between the United States and the United Kingdom. The King and Queen will travel to the U.S. for a four-day visit beginning Monday.

The royal couple will meet with Trump at the White House, where the King will hold a private meeting with the president and deliver an address to Congress. After two days in Washington, they will travel to New York, Virginia and Bermuda before returning to the U.K.

The Foreign Office said the trip will mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and celebrate a partnership of "shared prosperity, security and history."

The visit follows a series of friction points between the two governments. In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump said Lord Mandelson was "a really bad pick" as U.K. ambassador to the U.S.

Trump has repeatedly called on the U.K. to increase oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. He also said he was "not happy" with the level of support offered by the U.K. for the war in Iran.

Trump's comments about Mandelson came as the two countries have been navigating disagreements on multiple fronts. The state visit is expected to span four days, with the royal couple dividing their time between Washington and other stops before departing for home. The King's address to Congress will mark a notable occasion, as the visit also coincides with commemorations of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
