KATHMANDU — Nepal's Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, citing questions raised about his investments and other matters. He became the second minister to withdraw from the government formed one month earlier under Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

"I have resigned from the position of Home Minister with effect from today," Gurung said in announcing his departure. He said the questions surrounding his investments and other matters should be investigated.

"For me, morality is greater than a position, and there is no greater power than public trust. Public life should be clean, leadership should be accountable," Gurung said.

Gurung had taken office on March 27, 2026. During his brief tenure, he ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak in connection with an investigation into their roles during a crackdown on youth-led protests in September 2025.

Dipa Dahal, press adviser to Shah, confirmed she had received the resignation. Shah will take charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs until a new appointment is made.

Shah, a 35-year-old rapper-turned-politician, became prime minister after the Rastriya Swatantra Party won the parliamentary election held in March 2026. The party had promised to control corruption and provide good governance and transparency. Shah previously served as mayor of Kathmandu for three years.

Earlier in April 2026, the government formed a five-member commission led by a former Supreme Court judge to investigate the assets of politicians and officials. The commission was part of the government's 100-point reform agenda issued after Shah took office.

Also in April 2026, Shah dismissed Dipak Kumar Sah as labour minister. The Rastriya Swatantra Party ruled that Sah had misused "the dignity of his position" to get his wife appointed as a member of the board of directors of the Health Insurance Board. Nepal ranks 109th out of 180 countries on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index.
