The Foo Fighters released Your Favourite Toy, the band's 12th studio album and its second since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Ilan Rubin has joined the group as its new drummer.
Hawkins was found dead in his hotel room hours before a scheduled concert. His cause of death has never been officially confirmed.
Bass guitarist Nate Mendel said the group remains connected to Hawkins' family. "His wife is on the road with us right now. We're still very close to the Hawkins family. We talk about him every day," he said. Mendel described the current lineup as a changed group. "We are a different band," he said, adding, "Taylor was such an energetic presence, he just brought himself so much."
Dave Grohl said the band has drawn on music to process the loss. "This band was born out of the pain of losing Kurt [Cobain] and Nirvana, so we've always relied on music to help us through difficult times and it has certainly done that in my life in the last year and a half," he said.
Grohl demoed more than 50 songs during the writing process, many of them instrumental, drawing on influences including Massive Attack, Pink Floyd and Bad Brains. He wrote the track "Of All People" after bumping into a drug dealer he had known in Seattle in the 1990s, and recorded it the morning after writing it in a small studio above his garage. Grohl has been largely drug-free since he turned 20.
"I can still connect with that side of myself where I can scream and we can thrash, and it feels good," he said.
