KYIV'S HOLOSIIVSKYI DISTRICT — Special tactical police units stormed a supermarket in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district and killed a gunman who had taken hostages after killing at least six people, Head of Ukraine's Interior Ministry Ihor Klymenko said. Police negotiators spoke with the attacker for roughly 40 minutes before entering the building.

The gunman killed four bystanders on the street and a fifth person inside the supermarket before barricading himself in with hostages. A sixth victim, a young woman, later died from her injuries in the hospital.

"We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside. We even offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond," Klymenko said. During the negotiation, an officer was heard appealing to the attacker: "The people are not to blame for this. Please, let them go and we will talk with you."

After negotiation attempts failed, tactical units moved in and the attacker was killed while resisting arrest. "Consequently, the order was given to neutralize him," he said.

Televised footage showed police taking cover in the shopping mall that housed the supermarket while shots were fired. Bystanders were escorted away from the scene.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least five people were killed and ten more were hospitalized. The shooting took place in the Holosiivskyi district, one of Kyiv's southern districts.

The man was carrying a carbine, a legally registered short-barrel assault rifle. In December 2025, the assailant approached licensing authorities to have the weapon test-fired as his permit was expiring, provided a medical certificate, and submitted an application to renew the permit. An investigation will determine which medical institution issued the certificate.
