MICHIGAN — Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks over a gearshift defect that can increase the risk of a crash. The recall affects F-150 vehicles equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions produced between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017.

A loss in signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause certain F-150 trucks to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, which could result in a loss of vehicle control. Some F-150 pickup trucks may experience an intermittent transmission range sensor signal to the powertrain control module, which may lead to a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear.

The unintended downshift may cause an abrupt reduction in wheel speed, which in some situations could cause the rear tires to slide until the vehicle speed slows. Some vehicle owners may notice an illuminated malfunction indicator light or wrench light on the dashboard if there is an issue with the transmission range sensor, according to the recall report.

Ford is aware of two injuries and one accident potentially related to the gearshift issue. The company plans to send letters to vehicle owners beginning April 27, and owners can take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have affected components updated or replaced at no cost.

Customers can determine if their vehicle is included in the recall by entering its Vehicle Identification Number on www.ford.com/support/recalls. The recall covers trucks built across a production window spanning from March 2014 through August 2017.
