NEW YORK CITY — The Broadway revival of David Auburn's play Proof opened Thursday night at the Booth Theatre in New York City. The production, directed by Thomas Kail, is the first Broadway revival of the play and runs two hours and 30 minutes with one intermission.

Ayo Edebiri plays Catherine, a Chicago student whose father has just died. Don Cheadle plays Catherine's father, Robert, a struggling math genius who has died. Kara Young plays Catherine's older sister, Claire, who lives in New York and contributed cash to her father's care but kept physical distance from Hyde Park. Jin Ha plays Hal, one of Robert's students, who examines Robert's notebooks when reviewing his work.

The play is set on the Southside of Chicago in the 1990s. Catherine is 25 years old on her birthday, and Robert died one week before the opening scene. The revival begins with a fantasized conversation between Catherine and her late father, Robert.

Mary Louise Parker originally played Catherine in the original Broadway production of Proof more than 25 years ago. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. A 2005 film adaptation starred Gwyneth Paltrow as Catherine.

The set design, featuring a University of Chicago backyard, was designed by Teresa L. Williams. Amada Zieve is the lighting designer, and Kris Bowers composed the original music for the revival. The Booth Theatre is located at 222 West 45th Street.
