NATIONWIDE — Viatris Specialty LLC voluntarily recalled a nationwide supply of Xanax XR extended-release tablets in late March 2026 after batches failed to dissolve at a standard rate, U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials announced. The recalled product, also known by its generic name alprazolam, was placed under a Class II recall.

The recall covers Xanax XR 3-milligram strength tablets sold in 60-pill bottles bearing Lot #8177156 with an expiration date of Feb. 28, 2027. The bottles were distributed nationwide between Aug. 27, 2024, and May 29, 2025, according to the California State Board of Pharmacy.

The tablets failed dissolution specifications, meaning they did not break down at the expected rate. Products subject to a Class II recall may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled tablets, and the California State Board of Pharmacy said it was not aware of any reports of adverse reactions. The board said the recall was made out of an abundance of caution.

FDA officials are not warning against consuming the recalled tablets at this time. The agency advised that individuals with questions or concerns about the recalled product should consult their doctor or pharmacist. "In some instances, stopping your medicine may be more harmful to your health than continuing to take the recalled medicine," the FDA stated.

Individuals who have bottles of the affected product should check for Lot #8177156 and the Feb. 28, 2027, expiration date to determine whether their prescription is included in the recall.

Xanax is one of the most widely prescribed medications used to treat generalized anxiety and panic disorders. According to American Addiction Centers, the drug is generally considered safe and helpful when used as directed, with its intended effect lasting up to six hours. According to the National Library of Medicine, the substance is considered highly addictive due to its psychodynamic properties, including creating feelings of euphoria.
