PORT-AU-PRINCE — Marigot Mayor René Danneau appealed to Haiti's central government for assistance on Tuesday after a gang attack in the area of Seguin killed seven people and left a police station in flames. The attack took place overnight on Monday in the commune of Marigot, located in southern Haiti.

Armed men entered Seguin during the overnight hours and set the local police station on fire. Seven people were killed during the assault. The specific gang responsible for the attack was not immediately identified, and no group had claimed responsibility.

"We are asking the prime minister to take all necessary measures," Danneau said Tuesday. According to the mayor, the seven victims were young men who had worked alongside police in the area, gathering information to help protect the local population from armed groups.

The attack in Seguin represented an expansion of armed groups into new territory within the commune of Marigot. Gang violence in Haiti has largely been centered in Port-au-Prince, the capital, and in rural areas to the north of the city.

The deadly assault took place as Haiti continues to face gang-related violence. More than 5,500 people were reported killed across the country between March 2025 and January 2026, with more than 2,600 others injured, according to U.N. statistics. Gang violence has also displaced more than 1.4 million people in Haiti, a country of nearly 12 million, the U.N. reported. No response from Haiti's central government or security forces to the mayor's appeal was immediately available.
